The wine route in the Alsace region of France is a road I'd gladly travel in all 4 seasons! Essentially, it's a string of adorable little half-timbered hamlets spanning roughly 100 miles from Mulhouse up to Strasbourg, and consists of the more well known towns such as Colmar, Kayserberg, and Riquewhir. Each little town is absolutely adorable and unique in it's own way.
We spent 3 dreamy days in Colmar (which you can see here). The day we left Colmar, our final destination was the European Christmas capital of Strasbourg. However, instead of just speeding away to Strasbourg on the freeway, we chose to take the wine route (ie: pretty much as scenic as it gets!). We meandered through the little villages, stopping at each for some mulled wine and treats at each Christmas market:)
The two towns we spent most of our time in were Kayserberg and Riquewihr. Both were very distinct in their own way.
Kayserberg was my favorite. I literally could have spent a few days there. It was charming, and the streets were very open, the people SO friendly, and they even had a gluten-free and vegan food stall, which I was stoked about! I got dairy free hot chocolate (made with coconut milk) and a gluten-free crepe with cashew cheese. The girl working the booth was so friendly and we chatted for a while, which was fun to hear a local's perspective. Like many Christmas markets, they serve your hot drinks in a real mug which you can either keep as a souvenir, or return and get a Euro back. I kept my cup and just used it last night...it brought back such fun memories:)
Riquewihr is an absolutely gorgeous little town, and everyone knows that, which is why it was packed. We unfortunately were there on a Sunday, which meant the crowds were crazy and because Riquewihr has such narrow streets, we felt the tightness all the more. However, it shouldn't be missed. It truly belongs in Beauty and the Beast!
Have you been on the wine route in the Alsace? What was your favorite city? I hope to go back someday and visit every town!! xoxo
